Retired Physician | Technology Educator | YouTube Creator | Co-Founder of Tech for Senior
I'm Dr. Ronald T. Brown, a retired Canadian physician, lifelong technology enthusiast, educator, and co-founder of Tech for Senior, a growing online community dedicated to helping older adults understand, embrace, and enjoy modern technology.
After a medical career spanning approximately 35 years, including experience as a flight surgeon, I've devoted much of my retirement to a second passion: making technology understandable and accessible to seniors.
I live in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and spend part of the winter in Arizona with my wife, Gail.
I believe that retirement should be a time of discovery, creativity, and lifelong learning. Technology plays an important role in making that possible.
I'm the co-founder and co-host of Tech for Senior, alongside my longtime friend and colleague Hewie Poplock.
What began as an effort to help seniors better understand technology has grown into an established YouTube channel with more than 24,000 subscribers and millions of video views.
Our mission is simple:
Helping seniors stay connected, informed, independent, and confident in today's digital world.
Together with our team of experienced technology enthusiasts, we produce regular educational programs, live technology discussions, tutorials, product reviews, and newsletters.
Our programming covers a wide variety of subjects, including:
Artificial intelligence and its practical applications
Windows computers, Chromebooks, and emerging computing platforms
Android smartphones, tablets, and wearable technology
Internet security, privacy, and online scams
Google products and services
Digital photography and photo management
Smart home technology and connected devices
Technology for healthy aging and independent living
New consumer technology products and services
One of my particular interests is helping seniors understand the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and how it can improve everyday life.
I don't just talk about technology. I use it extensively every day.
I'm actively involved in researching, scripting, recording, editing, and producing our educational content.
I have extensive experience with video production software, particularly Camtasia, and have edited hundreds of Tech for Senior programs. I regularly work with Audiate, Zoom, StreamYard, Canva, and other creative applications.
I'm especially interested in computers, Chromebooks, Google's evolving operating systems, artificial intelligence, and the ways technology can simplify everyday tasks.
I enjoy experimenting with new devices, evaluating emerging technologies, and translating complicated technical subjects into practical explanations that ordinary people can understand.
My background in medicine has strongly influenced my approach to technology education. I value accuracy, evidence-based information, clear explanations, and helping people make informed decisions.
Before entering the world of online technology education, I spent approximately 35 years practicing medicine.
My professional experience included work as a flight surgeon, combining my interests in medicine, aviation, and technology.
Medicine taught me the importance of communication, patience, education, and making complicated information understandable.
Those same principles now guide my work with Tech for Senior.
Although retired from medical practice, I maintain a strong interest in health technology, wearable devices, digital health monitoring, and innovations that help older adults remain healthy and independent.
Outside of technology and video production, I enjoy a wide range of interests.
Coffee and espresso: I'm an enthusiastic home barista who enjoys experimenting with espresso machines, grinders, coffee beans, and brewing techniques. Making a great espresso is both a science and an art.
Aviation: My background as a flight surgeon has given me a lasting interest in aircraft, flying, and aviation technology.
Photography and video: I enjoy digital photography, photo editing, and creating engaging visual content.
Travel: My wife Gail and I enjoy traveling, particularly spending time in Arizona during the winter months and exploring new places.
Cooking: I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, learning new techniques, and discovering ways technology can improve cooking.
Family: Family is an important part of my life, and I value staying connected with loved ones, wherever they happen to live.
Lifelong learning: Perhaps my greatest interest is simply learning something new. I'm naturally curious and enjoy understanding how things work.
I strongly believe that age should never be a barrier to learning or enjoying technology.
Today's digital world can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly for older adults who have watched computing evolve from its earliest days into today's world of smartphones, artificial intelligence, and connected devices.
But technology doesn't need to be intimidating.
With patient explanations, practical demonstrations, and a little encouragement, almost anyone can become comfortable using modern technology.
I also believe seniors have an enormous advantage: decades of real-world experience, perspective, and judgment.
The challenge is not necessarily learning every new feature. It's understanding which technologies genuinely improve our lives.
That's what I try to accomplish through Tech for Senior.
My current interests include the evolution of artificial intelligence, Google's computing platforms, consumer technology, digital privacy, video production, and tools that help older adults maintain independence.
I'm particularly interested in how AI assistants and new computing technologies will change the way people interact with computers over the coming years.
I continue to research new products, create educational videos, host technology discussions, and share practical advice with the growing Tech for Senior community.
To make technology understandable, useful, safe, and enjoyable for older adults.
I believe retirement is not the end of learning. It's an opportunity to explore entirely new interests, develop new skills, and share knowledge with others.
After spending much of my professional life helping patients understand their health, I'm now enjoying the opportunity to help people understand technology.
And I'm still learning something new every day.
